AUCKLAND, May 22'. The Education Board’s annual report stated the cost of the conveyance and board of children .attending schools in the Auckland education district last year amounted to nearly £150.000, and it is still difficult to obtain sufficient vehicles to provide efficient services throughout the district, and many of the vehicles now in use have reached a stage where they require replacement. The Government has offered to help in authorising grants for erecting teachers’ residences but there has been the greatest difficulty in obtaining tenders. “The board has made various approachces to have State-erected houses available for school teachers, but so far with only limited success.

The board recommends that al least one residence should be provided for teachers in each State housing area. Boarding accommodation for assistant eachers has been difficult and while some districts have been most generous in their assistance, some others have not co-operated as well as could be hoped. The board The board is also very concerned for the welfare of’ its teachers in country areas.
