Ships’ Carpenters Seek Pay Rise at Wellington

WELLINGTON, May 22. Ship carpenters working mi five overseas vessels and one coastal ship in the port of Wellington attended a long stop-wofk meeting over wage and bonus demands. _ They asked for sixpence an hour (£1 a. week) increase in wages and a profit-distribu-tion bonus similar to that enjoyed by waterside workers. Work was not resumed after the meeting. The ships affected are the Port Wellington, which is loading butter general cargo, the Somerset and and cheese, the Samleven, loading Eastgate, loading foodstuffs, and the Australind. AH these are bound for Britain. The Gabriella was affected for a while. Matters in dispute will be referred to a meeting of the executive of the Wellington Waterside Workers' Union, of which ship carpenters are a section. The president of the union, Mr A. C. Dellaway, said that until the matter had been considered by the executive, developments in the dispute were uncertain.
