Auckland Farmers Support Dairy Commission

AUCKLAND, May 22.

A decision to accept the recentlyestablished Dairy Commission, and to support it as far as members are able was made by the Auckland provincial conference of the Federated Farmers of New Zealand to-day. Some critics of the formula by which the guaranteed price is fixed were answered by the chairman of the federation’s dairy section, Mr R. J. Glasgow. The time the farmer spent in producing butterfat was not lost sight of, he said He was not optimistic, however, as to the farmers’ chance of having his prices associated with the five day, 40-hour week.

“You will, in my opinion, get some monetary recognition of the fact that you have to work longer hours than the rest of the community,” he said. “But anybody who tells you that prices are likely to be associated with the 40-hour week is misleading you.” It was decided that the federation should promote a publicity campaign setting out the need for the industry to be maintained —if necessary through the Consolidated Fund.
