Terrorism Swallows Taxation in Palestine
(Rec. 8.10). LONDON, May 2'l. Last night, Mr Montague Brown, the Palestine Government’s principal Assistant Secretary, gave a broadcast from Jerusalem on the situation. He said that the terrorism had increased the security expenditure from four and a-half millions sterling two years ago, to eight millions sterling this year. He added that the next estimates would show that a large part of the budget has had to be devoted to the security forces, instead of being spent on development in the country. This development has had to be postponed, and it was obvious that this huge expenditure ruled out any possibility of taxation relief.
