SAN FRANCISCO, May 18.

A .former Congressman, Mr Charles R. Savage, a “Progressive”, who is supported by groups favouring Mr Henry Wallace’s views on foreign policy, easily defeated the Washington State Attorney-General, Mi’ Smith Troy, who campaigned as a “Truman Democrat”, in a special primary election to decide the Democratic nomination for the Washington State’s third district seat in Congress. Mr Savage polled 16,452 votes and Mr Troy 11,546. Mr Savage is a former Labour union official. He will contest the seat against the Republican candidate. Mr Russell V. Mack, a newspaper publisher. The by-election will be held on June 7. The vacancy was created by the death of Mr Fred Norman (Republican), who defeated Mr Savage in the 1946 general election by a margin of 6800 votes of a total of 88,855 votes cast.
