JAP. DEMOCRATS PROMISE TO COPY BRITISH LABOUR RULE
TOKIO, May 16.
The Social Democrat Party leader, Tetsu Katayama, declared that if he became Premier, he would base his Government policies on those of the British Labour Government. Katayama was the guest of Tokio foreign press correspondents’ club. He outlined the Social Democrat Party programme as follows: (1) To turn Japanese politics into democratic channels; (2) make Japan completely a peaceful nation; (3) to establish a decocratic State-controlled economy. He said that in view of the economic situation a Coalition Government was desirable. Katayama added that the Social Democrats are opposed to the Communists, whose advances they have refused.
