GREEK SUCCESS IN CAMPAIGN AGAINST REBELS

ATHENS, May 17. The Prime Minister, M. Maximos, answering a series of written questions, submitted to him, said that a considerable part of the United States aid would be used for the modernisation of the Greek Army so that the Greek people would feel completely secure. The remainder would be used to meet the country’s requirements of consumer goods and raw materials and to cover an additional gap that had been created by the country’s diminished 1947 crops. The Government estimated that effective results in the campaign against the guerrillas would soon be attained, unless the rebels received new reinforcements from outside.

The Premier said: The Reuter’s press and the official statements against Greece . by responsible political circles in neighbouring countries have made it apparent that there is concerted action against Greece’s territorial integrity and political stability. It is officially announced that the Greek Army has now surrounded the guerrillas in the Khassia and Kamvounia mountains, in Northern Thessally. Mopping up operations have resulted in the destruction of all the guerrillas’ fortified positions, with 250 guerrillas killed, wounded, or taken prisoner.
