HOKITIKA NOTES

(Oui Own Correspondent) - HOKITIKA, May 19. _ Owing to shipping delays, the furniture of the Commissioner of Crown Lands, who was recently transferred from here to a new post in the North Island, will be railed from Hokitika to Blenheim and from Blenheim Io the North Island will be transported by air. The Gael arrived from Jackson Bay at 8.30 on Monday morning. After discharge she will load timber and general cargo for Wellington, and will sail at 10.30 this morning.

The death occurred at the Westland Hospital on Monday morning of Mr Norman Friend, a well-known resi dent of Okarito, where he was born and resided all his life. He took a keen interest in the development of South Westland, and was an advocate for opening the port of Okarito as an outlet for the products of the district For a long period he acted as signal man at Okarito when the Gael and other vessels made trips to the port to transport'lambs and silver pine sleepers. He was a Justice of the Peace, and an honorary Ranger for the Westland Acclimatisation Society, taking an interest in the protection of native game. He has been in failing health for some time, and some months ago underwent an operation at the Greymouth Hospital, and returned to his home. Later he came to the Westland Hospital, where he was a patient for six weeks. He is survived by two brothers, Henry (Okarito), and George (Greymouth). The following teams have been selected to play a trial match at Ross prior’ to the selection of the Westland junior representatives to play the Greymouth reps in a curtain-raiser match to the Coast v.
