CRICKET R. DONALDSON SCORES CHANCELESS CENTURY AGAINST HOKITIKA

Scoring freely off all the bowlers, with the exception, perhaps, of Parker, R. Donaldson, cutting driving and hooking with precision, scored his second century of the 1946-47 season on the West Coast, when he made 104 in the Barlow Cup match against Hoki-

tika on a concrete wicket last Saturday.

After playing himself in quietly, he scored 10 runs before the luncheon adjournment, and upon resumption of play punished the attack. His partner, F. Pascoe, who has also scored a century this season, was more subdued, scoring 35 in a little over three hours at the crease. His innings was, however, a lesson to all on how patience plays a major part with the bat.

Hokitika’s bowling attack was well below that which is usually displayed, Stoop being accurate though not impressive, and Wallace out of form. R. Lee and A. Abelson appreciated the hard nature of the wicket, and bowled to top form. Lee collected a valuable wicket in his first over when he shattered P. Boyce’s stump with a beautiful leg-spinner. Lee occasionally bowls this ball, but because of his pace the spin and flight is difficult to observe. He finished with the good figures of 7 for 37 off 18.4 overs.

A. Abelson, a Coast representative, used flight, pace and spin judiciously in capturing two for 13 off 10 overs. During the season both bowlers have had soft unresponsive wickets to bowl on, and they appreciated the change at Hokitika.

BLACKBALL WINS COMPETITION

By fielding keen and enterprising players in all of its matches, Blackball, a new side, have played serious cricket throughout the season to carry off the major honours in the West Coast Cricket Association’s senior competition, a reward which they richly deseved. Their smart and sure fielding has saved many runs, and their batting side, if not always strong, has- been capable of scoring creditable totals, through someone always coming to the fore with a bright innings.

United, who after a scratchy start, rallied near the end of the competition to be placed second, only two points behind the leeadrs, suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of Brunner soon after Christmas. Blackball will now play Hokitika, for the Wingham Cup at Blackball on March 29, and the outcome of this match iS awaited with interest.
