“Operation Potato 5 ’ 9 May be Upshot of Sydney Wharf Strike
(Rec. 9.55). SYDNEY, March 19 Bruised, and with one leg bandaged, Mr E. D. Darby, M.L.C., to-day offered “Operation Potato”, as his answer to yesterday’s disturbance.
Mr Darby received a steady stream of congratulations all of the morning. Mr Darby said that he was concerned with the fact that the potatoes in the that are tied up represented thirty-seven thousand pound. 1 / of the taxpayers’ money, because these potatoes were owned by the Commonwealth.
So far. he said, the Government had not given any indication that it wou.'d accept responsibility, either by legislation or by giving police protection, to volunteer labour. “I will wait for the Government tn do something, and if they don’t, I will plan ‘Operation Potato’, which will mean getting the potatoes off the ships”, he concluded.
