CEUBS ASK FOB .MORE TOTE PERMITS

P.A. WELLINGTON, March 11. In the past twenty years the increase in the popularity of trotting had resulted in an increase of one hundred per cent, in the number of registered horses and owners, in the value of stakes, and in the volume of totalisator investments, said Mr C. S. Thomas, leading counsel for the Trotting Conference, in a statement to the Gaming Commission to-day 7. Mr Thomas said there had been no increase in the number of permits since 1924, and the number of days available was inadequate in view of the increased popularity of the sport. The Trotting Conference would present its main case in Christchurch, but he could say it held the view that the distribution of permits on a population basis would be fallacious. The Conference view was that the allocations should be on the basis of the comparative popularity of the sport in each district.

Applications for additional permits were made on behalf of the Wellington Trotting Club, Carterton Racing Club, Manawatu Trotting Club, and Marlborough Trotting Club. On behalf of the Wellington Trotting Club, Sir William Perry asked the Commission to rec’ommend ' that the club be granted two additional totalisator permits a year, thus allowing the club to have four twoday meetings yearly. At present six days were allowed Wellington, he said, comparing very unfavourably with Auckland city’s 11 and Christchurch city’s 17. P.A. WELLINGTON, March 11.

The Royal Commission on Gaming was occupied to-day in hearing applications by individual clubs in Wellington, Manawatu, and Wairarapa districts, for extra, or fresh totalisator permits. Applications- were submitted for consideration in case the recommendations of the Commission resulted in further totalisator permits being granted. Carterton and Masterton Racing Clubs each asked for an extra day. Wellington Trotting Club, and Manawatu Trotting Club each asked for two extra days, so that the former could conduct four two-day meetings-

annually, and the latter two two-day meetings. Marlborough Trotting Club asked for an extra permit so that it could conduct one two-day meeting. Otaki Trotting Club, a non-totalisa-tor club, sought one permit, as did the newly-formed Wairarapa Hunt Club.
