THE TURF WESTLAND R.C.

MONTEZUMA HOKITIKA FANCY Sprint Will Suit Race Lad The Westland Racing. Club’s midsummer meeting which opens today and will conclude on Monday, should prove most successful. Excellent fields are carded to appear and some fine racing should be witnessed. Ten have been paid up for in the principal event, and on recent foim Montezuma, Palomino and Vonettee should find most favour with the public. Montezuma has some splendid place performances to her credit and if she were to repeat her Wellington effort, when third to Opulent and Al Sirat over a mile, she would take a power of beating. At her last start the daughter of Battle Song and Praise was fifth in the Craven Plate, finishing just ahead of Royal Tor. Two that will test her thoroughly are Palomino and Vonette. Palomino impressed when she took the Hannan Memorial at Greymouth, and appears to be improving with every outing. Vonettee a speedy mare, sticks on particularly well. The long Hokitika straight should suit her admirably. If a surprise is in store it may come from Avonbridge.

The track is reported to be in excellent order, and some fast times should be recorded.

Horses which displayed good form at the Kumara and Greymouth meetings should pay to follow. Of them the following appeal.— Novice Stakes: Glamis Pal, Renege, Hansel. February Trot: Golden Sheaf, Troubadour, Hardy Annual. , Thompson Handicap: Foreign Ways, Mercia’s Mystery, Bannockburn.
