A fire in Hastings gutted an old wooden building used as a garage and storage shed in Robert Holt and Sons’ timber yards in King Street and an employee, living in the buildings, suffered from the effects of smoke and shock, and afterwards died. He was Richard Burns, aged 49, married, with two children. Mr. Burns made attempts to save his personal effects in the burning building and he suffered from the effects of smoke. He was given first-aid treatment and subsequently was found near the building dead. Two motor lorries were also destroyed by the fire. TIMARU, Dec. 16. Frederick George Mander, aged 18 years, was found drowned in the Waihi river at Woodbury, near Geraldine, on Saturday. Mander, who was in the employ of Mr. W. Cole, of “Sundrum,” Woodbury, had been missing since Tuesday ,when search parties organised by Constable J. Robertson, of Geraldine, searched the river, which at the time was running high. About 10.45 a.m. .on Saturday one of the searchers, Ewart Scott, of Woodbury, found the body partly covered in debris.
