CRICKET
UNITED STRONG At the annual meeting of the United Cricket Club on Wednesday evening, Mr G. Sansom presided in .the absence of the president (Mr. M. Banks). In the president’s annual report, it was stated that last year, club membership had increased considerably, enabling three teams, two senioi’ and one junior, to be fielded. Considerable success was attained, this being largely due to the fact that good attention had been paid to practice. It was hoped that this season a coaching scheme whereby younger players would receive coaching in correct stroke play, would be evolved, and that the coaching film produced by .the New Zealand Cricket Council Would be made available. During the season, the club lost the services of one of its vice-presidents, Mr J. R. Williams, who had moved to the North Island. Best wishes of the club were extended to him in his' new sphere, and to the club which secured his services. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: — President, Mr G. Sansom; vice-presi-dents, Mrs G. Walker, Messrs H. Ryan, H. C. Morgan, H. W. Pyne, J. Becker, J. R. Williams, J. Paterson, W. M. Stewart, and Pankhurst; sec-retary-treasurer, Mr W. O. Blair; club-captain, Mr L. Coffey; committee, Messrs M. Marshall, O. Scott, H. Westwood, J. Molloy; delegates to West Coast Cricket Association, C. Dittman and G. McLean. Subscriptions were fixed at the same as last year. Opening day was set down for October 13. The following new members were elected to the club: Messrs B. Marshall, M. Vernon, J. Davenport, Bidwell, and J. Webster. It was stated that the club had a membership of 33 players. It was decided that efforts be made to form a ladies’ cricket club, and .the secretary was instructed to call a meeting for a later date.
It was resolved that strong representations be made to the 1 West Coast Association to do all in its power to foster inter-firm games on the lines of a Mercantile League competition.
