ON A LARGE SCALE By British in Palestine (Rec. 8.5) LONDON. Aug. 25. “New large scale military operations are likely to begin this morning in Palestine,” says the Exchange Telegraph Agency’s Jerusalem correspondent. “The Army Public Relations Officer at a.m. summoned the foreign press correspondents to be ready for immediate departure to an unknown destination. Such a summons previously has been the prelude to large scale operations. Settlement Cordoned SEARCH FOR MINES (Rec. 11.40) LONDON, Aug. 26. Reuter’s Jerusalem correspondent reports: Four thousand ißi’itish infantrymen cordoned off the Jewish settlement of Sdoth-Yom, near Caesarea. They began to search for limpet mines. The settlers offered no resistance. They gave names and’ addresses despite contrary instructions from the Haganah’s “Voice of Israel.” It was limpet mines that were used to damage the transport “Empire Rival” last week. The searchers have used, for the first time, dogs that have specially been trained in Germany for the detecting of metals. Two hundred illegal Jewish immigrants landed at Sdoth-Yom on 16th. August. The Polish Government is now issuing passports to Jewish immigrants, and the Czech Government is granting visas for 900 daily to pass across the country, says the Daily Telegraph’s Prague correspondent. The Czech Government is daily placing a special train at' the Jews’ disposal, permitting transit for the number the American zone will accept. JERUSALEM, August 25. British troops and police combing an orange grove at_. Nathanya, between Tel Aviv and Haifa, discovered Jews training with a Bren gun. They captured two, but the others escaped. Royal Air Force aircraft are helping in the search. Twenty-five illegal immigrants' last night escaped without a trace from the Athljt clearance camp, near Haifa. The authorities decided not to attempt a search of nearby settlements for the men. Instead, they are deducting 25 from next month’s quota of 1500 immigrants. The Arab Higher Committee decided to accept the British Government’s invitation * to participate in talks in London, providing the Arab delegation includes the Grand Mufti. It is reported from Baghdad that the Iraqi Government has also accepted an invitation to the talks, on condition that neither the Jews nor the United States is represented at the conference. Dr. Weizmann, the world Zionist leader, sent a letter to the British Colonial Secretary, saying the Jews would join only in a discussion on a plan envisaging Jewish statehood. The Jewish Agency must have full freedom for designating its own delegates, including those under detention.
