TREASON CHARGE

Broadcast by Australian ORDER OF JAPANESE ARMY (Rec. 8.45). SYDNEY, August 26. After a broadcast from Radio Tokio, Major Charles Hughes Cousens walked from the studios with tears in his eyes, according to the evidence of Hiroshi Niino, a former Tokio radio announcer, in the Central Court today. “Cousens said he would rather be a janitor and mop the floor; than read this damnable commentary,” added witness. When the fifth day of the hearing of the treason charge against Major Cousens opened to-day, Mi' Shand, for the defence, told the Court that if Mr Corn did not call Lieutenant-Commander Henshaw, of the United States Intelligence, the defence would bring him to Sydney. Niino, who took the Christian oath, said that on. the day, Cousens was introduced, he was threatened by Major Tsuneishi/who said that he was to broadcast by order of the Japanese Army. A year later, witness' began broadcasting in English, and received tuition from Cousens. He did not regard Cousens as a traitor.
