NEHRU’S GOVERNMENT

SET UP IN INDIA .Moslems Hold Aloof (Rec. 5.30). NEW DELHI, Aug. 24. - His Majesty has accepted the resignation of the “caretaker” Indian Governemnt, and has. l appointed a new Government, headed by Pandit Nehru (Congress' Leader). Two Moslem members will be appointed later. The Government will take the oath orr September 2. Lord Wavell, broadcasting over’ (he. New Delhi radio, urged the Moslem League to reconsider its decision not to participate in Nehru’s new interim Government. He said- Nehru and his colleagues were anxious that, both the’ main parties should be represented*, therein. He said: “The War member of the new Government will be anIndian, but this in no way changes! the armed forces’ constitutional position. The forces will still owe -allegiance to the King Emperor and to the British Parliament”. Lord Wavell said: “The ' recent serious disturbances in Calcutta were, a sobering reminder that a greater measure of tolerance is essential if. India is to survive a transition to freedom”. He emphasised that the army? was called in but. only as a last resort, to check civil disturbances, adding: “I express admiration for the; restraint of the .troops in the execution of an unpleasant, exacting duty.” Reuter’s New Delhi correspondent reports: Lord Wavell will fly to Calcutta to-morrow to study at first hand the situation in connection with the rioting there.
