BLACKBALL NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent). Mr and Mrs J. Feeney who haye been spending annual leave at Napier have returned. Mesdames A. Clark and M. Jenni:on and daughter who have been on holiday in Christchurch, are expected home tb-day. Mr G. Oliver who has been receiving treatment in Grey Hospital, has returned to Blackball. Nellie, the young daughter of Mr and Mrs E. Davies has entered the Grey Hospital. Mrs A. Walden and children felt on Thursday for Oajnaru, where they will spend the term holidays. Mrs C. Brown, accompanied by her sons, Dan and Eddie, has left for Timaru on holiday. The following schoolbm’s leave today en route to Auckland x to take part in the schools’ football competitions: Vic Mountford, T. Davey, N. Grindle, L. McNicol, J. Haisty and R. Hogg. Last Saturday a welcome home social and dance was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall to honour the West Coast footballers who had played against the English team in Auckland, and to welcome home Pte. T. Dillon, a member of the Japanese Occupation Force. Dancing’ was indulged 'in, the music being supplied by Mrs L. Kidd. Mr A. Kennedy (president of the local Rugby League), paid a fitting tribute to the West Coast boys for the splendid efforts they had made in securing such a splendid victory over the visitors. He presented each member with an envelope of notes. Mr Ron Neilson, senr., on behalf of the Soldiers’ Comforts and Welfare Committee, extended a hearty welcome home to Pte. T. Dillon, conveying the best wishes of all and presented him with the usual envelope. All the recipients very suitably replied. Tea was served by the ladies’ committee. To-night the local Loyal Buffalo Lodge hold their first annual ball in the Miners’ Hall. It should draw the support of all dancing fans. Many novelties are' to be introduced. The floor is in splendid order and the music is in the capable hands of Miss Rene Jacobs’ Orchestra, while capable M.’sC. will control the floor. The monthly meeting of the local Labour Party branch took place in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Thursday evening. Owing to many counter attractions the attendance was, not as good as it ought to have been. Dr Aylward, who presided, stated the membership, now registered 210, and was still growing. After routine business he called upon Mr W. Green (president of the Westland L.R.C.) to address the meeting. Mr Green, who had a good reception, took for his subject, a propaganda pamphlet lately issued by the Nationalist Party and item by item refuted it in no uncertain manner. He was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for a splendid address. Dr Aylward gave a learned address on the money system, and showed the Government’s actions in warding off inflation, their price control policy and the various methods adopted to control money in the country. He congratulated them on the good job they had done. He also received a hearty vote of thanks. It was left to the executive to arrange speakers for next meeting. The Greymouth visitors were entertained at tea by Mrs Aylward after the meeting.
