RACING AND TROTTING

N.Z. METROPOLITAN T.C. Lucky byai Winter Handicap Fancy Although only nine have been paid up for in the Winter Handicap, principal event on the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s first day’s card, it should be a spectacular contest. At the time of writing Turco and Lucky Loyal are outstanding favourites for this event. A, win in this race would make either of these geldings eligible for Cup class. Should the pace be slow in the early stages Turco may have the edge on his rival as he is recognised as one of the fastest sprinters in the country if given the run of th 4 race in behind. As against this the size of the field will assist Lucky Loyal, usually a slow beginner. He should be able to settle down and be within reach of the leaders in the early part. , His finishing run is both long and strong, and should the pace be slow his driver may elect to make full use of his speed and staying powers by endeavouring to get to the front earlier than is his custom. Lucky Loyal is at his best with the pace on all the way. Taking a line on his form at the matinee .meeting Indian Clipper must also be given a good chance.' The Jack Potts gelding has the reputation of being most unreliable. He is now in the care of H. J. Smith, who has done well with horses of a similar temperament, and if Indian Clipper can be prevailed upon to do his best he will win in any company. Of the remainder Warform and Trusty Scott read best, but whatecer beats Lucky Loyal and Turco should win. The Speedway Handicap has drawn a fine field. Regarded as likely to qualify for Cup class as a four-year-old this season, Sir Michael may be the elect of backers, but he will have to be right at his best to hold off Dunmore, Liberty Bend and Cumeronian. Most of the best of the unhoppled horses in commission claim an engagement in the Stewards’ Handicap run over a mile and five furlongs. Of those on the limit mark Endowed makes most appeal. A young and improving trotter, he appears to have a bright, future. The best of those further back in the handicap may be Believe Me, Casabianca, Fantom and Mae Wynne, but it is difficult to see this trio give a start and a beating to their younger opponent. Always a popular event with patrons, the F’ree-for-All should provide a splendid contest. The forward showing made by Gold Bar at the recent matinee meeting shows him to be at the top of his form, and as he is racing over his favourite distance he is likely to be a firm favourite. With luck in the running both Clockwork and Integrity are capable of fully extending Alan Holmes’ horse, while Happy Man, Countless and In the Mood must also be considered. The Addington track is in excellent order and some fast times should be

registered. The win and place totalitors will operate, and the following horses should have prospects: Intermediate Handicap: Quite Right,- Quartermaster, Gelert.
