47 STOWAWAYS

AUSTRALIAN SOLDIERS RETURN HOME. (Rec. 8.25.) SYDNEY, May 16. The troopship Canberra berthed at Circular Quay to-day with a record number of forty-seven stowaways aboard. The unofficial passengers used careful planning to get aboard. Dressed as workmen, a gang of soldiers boarded the ship at Rabaui and dropped ropes over the side to assist their mates. Ten men were discovered hiding in life-boats before the ship sailed, but the others were able to stay under cover until the ship had been four days at sea.
