Barclay and Mrs. Barclay left by ’plane for Wellington yesterday. Mr. G. J. Gaffaney who is to take up duties as editor of the Greymouth Evening “Star” next week, arrived by yesterday's express. The promotion of Lieut-Uol-(Temp. Brigadier) A. E. Conway, New Zealand staff corps and of Lieut. Col. (Temp. Brigadier) A. B. Williams, New Zealand Artillery, to be Colonels was gazetted last night. The appointment of Justices Biair, Smith, Kennedy and Callan as members of the Rules Committee under the Judicature Amendment Act was gazetted last night. The New Zealand Prime Minister, Right Hon. P. Fraser, has been presented’ with the diploma of honorary fellowship of the Royal Institute of British Architects, states a London cable. The late President Roosevelt’s executors are claiming the exemption of his estate from personal state income tax for 1944 on the ground that as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the late President was a member of it within the meaning of the income tax law, which, grants a year’s tax exemption ' to servicemen who died while in service.—P.A. The result of the election, under the Government Railways Act. for members of the Government Railways’ Appeal Board, was gazetted last night. Messrs. Herbert Johanson, V/illiam Park, Alfred John Cleverley, George Hill, and James Andrew Barton have been elected.—• P.A. Sir Shotlo Douglas, Marshall of the iR.A.F. has been appointed Com-mander-in-Chief of the British Forces in Germany, and Military Governor of the British zoone and British member of the Allied Control Council, stated a London cablegram. Nash, announced yesterday that at the Government’s invitation. Hon. E. Ward, Minister of External Territories, and Minister of, .Transport in Australia, would pay a visit to New Zealand this month. The main purpose of the visit was to discuss informally with members of the Government, various questions or mutual interest, relating to the welfare of native peoples in Pacific territories. Mr. Ward also proposed to take the opportunity of discussing transport matters. He will arrive at Auckland' on Saturday, and proceed to Wellington by car. He is expected to remain in New Zealand ten days.—P.A.
