N.Z. GRAIN YIELDS

LESS WHEAT EXPECTED More Oats and Barley P.A. WELLINGTON, February 14. The following estimates of the average yield per acre of New Zealand wheat, oats, and barley in that order for the season 1945-46, have been compiled from reports furnished by '.officers of the Department of Agriculture throughout the Dominion, states to-night’s Gazette (ail in bushels-per acre):— North Island: Wheat 38; oats 41; barley 49. Marlborough: Wheat 33; oats 38; barley 39. Nelson: Wheat 30; oats 34; barley 35. ' x Canterbury: Wheat 31; oats 42; barley 45. Otago: Wheat 40; oats 52; barley 40. Southland: Wheat 48; oats 59; barley 38. The estimated average for the whole Dominion is: Wheat 33; oats 48; barley 43. The above estimates may be compared with the last season’s actual average yields which were: Wheat 38.02; oats 54.18; barley 37.11. In accordance with the above estimates, the total yield of wheat for the' season should be approximately five million four hundred thousand bushels, as against an ascertained yield of 6,992,204 bushels for last season. Assuming that the usual average area of oats will be threshed this year, the total yield of grain would be approximately two million four hundred thousand bushels, compared with the yield of 4,209,143 bushels last season. On a similar assumption re-, garding barley, the total yield should approximate two million one hundred thousand bushels, compared with the yield of 1,384,957 bushels last season.
