WESTPORT RACES

NOTES BY “KAWATIRI” The West Coast racing circuit will start off with the Westport meeting to-morrow. This popular club is assured of a good many patrons from the Greymouth end of the Coast, and the club indeed should' have obtained a better response from the horse owners and trainers in Canterbury and Greymouth than that which it has secured, seeing that the club is giving better stakes than any club on the West Coast. Some of Walsh’s team at Omoto are not forward enough to make the trip to Westport. .Walsh will however, be represented by Lawless. Walsh is taking Royal Tor and John o’ London over to race at Riccarton, but Walsh expects on Monday to be present at the Westport meeting. Four Greymouth horses which yesterday proceeded to Westport by the morning train are 'Trench Law, Little Secret, Sir Tague and Highland Dance. Lawless left Greymouth last evening for Westport. It is regrettable that, a special train could not have been arranged as in former years from Greymouth for the meeting, as it certainly would have been booked out. Many who made the trip formerly had looked forward to it again. W. McKendry, Omoto. will be absent from Westport as he is taking Atreus to Canterbury, and has nobody to take his other charge to Westport. Judging by the fields Westport patrons can be assured of good racing. The horses engaged are a very even lot and of a good class. Among the ones that will do well are the following:— Buller Stakes: Lawless, Legal Rose and Scotty McCabe. Denniston Trot: Nelsonova, Emerald Isle, Scottish Actress. Westport Victory Handicap: Kiloney, Olga’s Choice, Gunga Din. Roche Handicap: Royal Vestments, Ration, Master Flash. Waimangaroa Trot: P'ointsman, Scottish Actress, Nelsonova. Scanlon Handicap: Lyndon Lea, Te Muka, Wildfire. Colvin Handicap: Prince Leighon, Record Voyage, Rex Maitland. Enright Hack Handicap: Big Top, Rampage, Olga’s Choice. SPORTS AT WEEK-END. Organised sport, other than racing, will be practically non-existent in Westport this week-end. A representative cricket team will go to Greymouth and athletes will compete for the Mahar Cup at Nelson. Most shops and offices, including local body offices, will be closed from Friday evening till Tuesday morning.
