MOKIHINUI NOTES

I (Our Own Correspondent) ' The w.eek-end seaside resort at the ■ beach at Mokihinui is in great demand, with its fishing and bathing facilities, also the sports ground and tennis courts, which are a credit tn those concerned who, by co-operating together and getting a subsidy from the Government, have made an ideal residential and week-end pleasure resort from what formerly was two or three acres of wilderness. SATURDAY v. MONDAY CLOSING. (To the Editor). Sir. —May be everybody would be better suited if Monday closing was adopted. With Saturday closing, country residents living within a radius of thirty miles of Westport—whether they be farmers, miners, roadmen, or railway employees—will have to lose a day’s work to do their shopping. Furthermore, it is now the vogue for country motorists to have minor repairs done in town on Saturday mornings. With Monday closing, as suggested, the Saturday morning would still be their shopping day. Employees would benefit by the extra half day on Saturday and thereby retain an even longer week-end. Employers would benefit also, by better returns. I am not conversant with the shop assistants’ award, and if this suggestion does not comply with their award, why not have it adjusted to suit our mining community? However. I suggest the following working hours: — Tuesday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (one hour for lunch); Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (one hour for lunch); Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (one hour for lunch); Friday, .8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (half hour lunch, half hour tea); Saturday, 3 a.m. to 1 p.m. Barbers’ shops and their customers might be better suited by observing a schedule one hour behind the above, with the exception of Saturday. It seems to me the all round advantage of a Monday closing is obvious, and to get “public opinion” on this important question, why not take a- “straw vote” by merely posting an envelope to either the County Clerk, or Town Clerk, Westport, with nothing more than “I Vote for Saturday Closing”; or “I Vote for Monday Closing”—John Citizen. I am, etc., “A COUNTRY COUSIN” BULLER A. AND P. ASSOCIATION. The president, Mr H. N. B. Archer, presided at a meeting of the general committee of the Buller A. and P. Association. There were also present Messrs P. Mikkelson, R. Lowe, N. Durkin, E. Oldham and Master Mclntyre. Apologies for non-attendance were received from Messrs S. Lowe, L. Men-1 zies, H. Bennett, J. Hay-Mackenzie, [ and H. V. Palmer. Mrs E. V. Ayers and Mr Drummond Fraser were elected members. Messrs M. Durkin and M. O’Dea were appointed to confer with representatives of the Buller Owners’ and Breeders’ Association in reference to | trotting events on show day. The offer of Mr R. Curragh for the publican’s booth privilege was accepted.

The secretary reported that he had communicated with Mr A. C. Hobbs in reference to the appointment of a judge for the vegetable section. He had also made enquiries in reference to champion ribbons. Further consideration of these matters was held over in the meantime. The next meeting was set. down for Tuesday next. OUTSTANDING RATES. Atention is drawn to the advertisement from the Town Clerk, reminding ratepayers that the last day to avoid the ten per cent, penalty is Thursday, February 28, 1946, and also advising all persons still owing money to the Council that they will be sued without further notice if their accounts are not paid by that date. The Council’s accounts are in good condition, but a few persons still persist in delaying payment of outstanding accounts, and it is possible that some form of publicity may be suggested by the Town Clerk to the Council, at an early date, in connection with these accounts. RATEPAYERS’ ASSOCIATION A meeting of the Westport Ratepayers’ Association which was have been held last evening was cancelled for lack of a quorum. MAIL NOTICES.
