GENERAL STRIKE
IN SINGAPORE. JAPANESE PRISONERS EMPLOYED. LONDON. Jan. 29. An Associated Press correspondent at Singapore states: On Friday night the police at Singapore clashed with demonstrators holding an authorised meeting in support of 175.000 strikers, who paralysed the city’s essential services. A general strike in Jahore was called and was originally planned for one day. hut th=re are indications it will continue. crowd stoned the police and surged to the police station and demanded the release of those arrested. Reinforcements prevented the situation developing. Pickets ' the streets all day in cars and lorries. Guards have been posted at installations throughout the e : ‘” rr ' , w authorities issued posters warning the strikers that they and their families would be the chief sufferers. Japanese prisoners of war are replacing the striking labourers. _____
