OBITUARY
MR HARRY HOPKINS (Rec. 11.35) NEW YORK, Jan. 30. The death has occurred of Mr Harry Hopkins, former special assistant to Mr Roosevelt. Mr Hopkins, who resigned from White House in July, 1945, entered hospital in November after being ill for several years. The nature of his illness thus far is not determined.
Mr Winston Churchill paid a tribute to Mr Hopkins. He said: “A great American has gone from us. A strong, bright, fierce flame burned out a frail body. Few know better than I the service he rendered the world. Mr Roosevelt had the gift of choosing generous, noble spirits to help him in peace and war. In Mr Hopkins he found not only a man of wide range of vision, but of a piercing eye. I have been present at several great conferences where discussion flagged and all seemed baffled. Mr Hopkins would rap out a deadly question: ‘Surely, Mister President, here is the point we have to settle. Are we going to face it or not?’ Faced it was, and. being faced’ was conquered.”
