AIRWAYS COMPETITION

Pan-American Coy. WANTS EXPANDED EUROPEAN SCOPE. (Rec. 8.40). NEW YORK, Jan. 28. The Pan-American World Airways Corporation has applied for authority to expand its services to Europe, because the existing Government routerestrictions threaten to reduce the company to a minor role in North Atlantic aviation. Pan-American Airways Coy. desires access to several airports in European countries, instead of only to one, as at present. The company points out that its American competitors were authorised in 1945 to serve substantially entire countries, whereas the Pan-American Coy’s licence for single airports was granted when, seven years ago, it pioneered a flying-boat service which is now outmoded. BRITISH-AMERICAN ■CONFERENCE (Rec. 9.10). NEW YORK, Jan. 28. A New York “Herald Tribune” correspondent at Bermuda stated: It is possible that one outconie of the Bri-tish-American civil aviation conference' may be the establishment of a permane > t British-American Governmental aviation board to deal promptly with constantly arising new problems foreseen in the development of air commerce. Such a body would not interfere with the functions of an international air transport association, which is still favoured as a medium for the controlling of faros and frequencies, and also for avoiding rate wars.
