A Washington cablegram announced that Admiral Lord Fraser, former Commander-in-Chief of the British Pacific Fleet has been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal by the United States Navy.

Billy Boyle of Kaiata competing in the Piping Section last Saturday at the Turakina North Island) Caledonian Games secured first place in the “A” Grade North Island' championship Strathspey and Reel also first in the “A” Grade Marches.

The many friends of Miss Jean Horrack will be pleased to learn of her success in the recent. State Nursing Examination. Miss Horrack. who is at present on the staff of the Hawera Hospital, has now completed general nursing and maternity examinations.

Sent by the Chief of Imperial General Staff, Lord Alanbrook, to confer with the chiefs of staff in Australia and New Zealand, Brigadier James Rene Vernham, of the War Office arrived in Auckland from Sydney on Saturday. He flew from England and has spent about a week in Australia.

A London cablegram stated that Marshal Montgomery is retaining the family name in the new title which will be gazetted shortly, as Viscount Montgomery of Alamein of Hindhead (Surrey), says the “Sunday Times.” Marshal Montgomery could not simply be Viscount Montgomery, because there is already an Earl Montgomery, an Irish Viscount Montgomery and a Scottish Barony Montgomerie.
