Dredge returns for December are: Kanieri, 1,638 ounces from 224,000 yards in 471 hours; Arahura, 1,250 ounces from 186,000 yards in 442 hours; Golden ’ Sands, 45 ounces 15 dwt., from 40 shifts.

An eel weighing 28& lbs., the largest so far caught this season, was taken front/ the Blaketown lagoon on a line yesterday) by Neville Morris. The previous best catch was taken from the Grey River in a whitebait net and weighed 20 lbs.

Most of the £1 tickets on Palava in the second race at the Greymouth Trotting Club’s meeting at Victoria Park yesterday were held by one investor, who collected more than £lOOO for a total investment of £22 10s. Only twelve £1 win tickets and thirteen £1 place tickets were sold, and this investor had eleven of each of them —as well as another 10s “for luck”—on the win machine.

Comparative figures for the last three months of the year and for December are: Three months: Births, 89 (86); deaths, 33 (39); marriages, 49 (30); marriages by Registrar, 9 (6). Local athletes will take the field again on Tuesday evening for the first time in 1946. The meeting should’ attract considerable interest, as the forthcoming fixture with a South Canterbury team at Greymouth, is only a week away. There has been more public interest snown in athletics on tho West Coast this season than for many years, and it is to be hoped that the continuance of the support already show, will give incentive for some of the most promising material in New Zealand to carry on to gain national honours.
