WESTPORT NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent) WESTPORT, January 3. Miss M. Murphy of Wellington, formerly of Westport, is visiting relatives here. M’ss E. McNamara is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. McNamara. Mr. and Mrs. J. Lake of Christchurch are visiting Mrs. Lake’s mother, Mrs. W. MacCubbin. Mr. R. Hay-Mackenzie has returned from Christchurch. Mr. J. Clunan of Jackson Bay, is visiting his sister, Mrs. T. Bonisch. Mr. and Mi;s. E. Griffiths and Mr. and Mrs. S. Peek are Greymouth visitors to Westport. Miss G. Hansby of Wellington, is visiting Westport. Mr. H. Hay-Mackenzie left yesterday for Christohurch. Miss E. Butterworth of Palmerston North, is visiting her parents. Misses Barbara, Nova and Dorothy Phibbs left yesterday for Dunedin. Miss G. Hansby of the nursing staff of the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Auckland, who is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. Hansby, has been notified of her success in passing her junior State examination. At the Mokihinui Sports Club’s annual gathering on New Year’s Day there was a large attendance and the presence of the Christchurch Ladies’ Pipe Band and Westport Boys’ Band added to the success of the day. The main events at the sports were the Maiden Saw, Maiden Chop, Open Saw and Open Chop. They -resulted as follows:—Maiden Saw, 12in. log (two cuts): Jenkins Brothers 1; Lowe and Scarlett 2; Ratcliffe Brothers 3. Time 15 secs. Maiden Chop, 12in. log: W Mumm 1; W. Jenkins 2; P. Snowden 3. Time 35 secs. Open Saw, Ilin, log (two cuts): Lowe and Scarlett 1: Rhind and Roy 2; Jenkins Brothers 3. Time 21 secs. 14in. Chop: V. Rhind 1; W. Jenkins 2; P. Snowden 3. Time 50 secs.

Buller Bowling Centre’s tournament is being played on the Granity R.S.A. and Westport greens, commencing under ideal weathei' conditions. After two days’ play the following was the position of the various rinks in the two sections: A Section: C. Mitchell (Westport) 3 wins; A. Burt (W.) 3 wins: C. Sara (W.) 2 wins; H. Harrison (W.) 2 wins; Peronne (Nelson) 3 wins: W. Hampton (Granity) 3 wins; E. Potter (Westport R.S.A.) 3 wins. B Section: Walker, substituted by A. J. Green (W.) 4 wins; S. Peek (Greymouth) 4 wins; W. Clark (Millerton) 3 wins. Karoro (Greymouth) Bowling Club’s team is competing in the tournament. Six matches have been won and the team is contesting the semi-finals today. The players are: T. Sotheran, E. Griffiths, G. Gilbert aiid S. Peek (skip). As from Saturday next the Westport butchers will not open on Saturday morning. Shops will open from Monday to Friday inclusive. During December-, rain was recorded on 22 days at Westport, the total registered being 6.19 inches, the same as in December 1944 for 20 days’ rain. The rainfall for the year just ended was -86.55 inches for 220 days, while for the year 1944, 85.46 inches was recorded for 222 days. The wettest month during 1945 was February, with 10.97 inches for 18 days. June was the driest month (4.25 inches falling on ten days). Sunshine registered during December totalled 212.4 hours, there being only three sunless days. For the corresponding month in 1944 228.2 hours for 30 days were registered. Foi* the year 1,816 hours of sunshine were recorded, there being 59 sunless days. For the previous year 1935.2 hours were recorded, there being 50 sunless days out of the 366. Ten births, five deaths and sixteen marriages were registered at Westport during December, as compared with 12, 3 and' 7 for the corresponding month of 1944. The totals for the year were 146 births, 80 deaths and 62 marriages, while the figures for 1944 were 136 births, 85 deaths, and 38 marriages. The death occurred this morning of Mr. James Kilmartin, aged 71. years. A native of Charleston, the late Mi’. Kilmartin had resided in the district all his life, and he was well and favourably known. He was single. Pie is survived-by two sisters, Mrs. Neame of Westport and Mrs. Carnegie of Sydney. There was a slight- increase in the customs returns at Westport last month as compared with December 1944. Sales tax and War Expenses revenue was greater than that of December, 1944, while there were decreases in the customs and beer duty. For the year the total returns were slightly greater than for the previous year. The following are the figures for December, 1945, with those of the corresponding month of 1944 in parenthesis:—Customs £291 12s 4d (£366 7s 4d); Beer £785 10s 6d (£875 18s Bdz; Sales Tax £562 Ils 8d (£503 0s sd); War Expenses Account £2,242 Ils 4d (£2,128 2s sd); Total, £3,882 5s lOd (£3,873 8s lOd). The yearly returns were: Customs, £3,983 Is 8d (£4,811 ]ss 8d); Beer £9,187 15s 5d (£8,406 6s lOd); Sales Tax £6,543 15s (£5,859 7s 4d); War Expenses Account £25,191 10s lOd (£23,484 17s 3d). Totals, £44,906 3s 11 (£42,562 7s Id).
