Bretton Woods Policy WILL NATIONS STOP OUT? (Rec. 11.40). NEW YORK, Jan. 2. Senior American Treasury and State Department officials are completely mystified as to why Russia has failed to avail herself of her original Bretton Woods membership rights and to co-operate in the international economic field as she has done in the political field. This is stated by a “New York Times” correspondent at Washington. The officials feel Russia might join later, but . not for some time, if at all. Besides Russia, eight other nations, including New Zealand and .Australia, jiavie lost their original member status. They may become members by applying when Fund and Bank Boards are organised. Some officials feel that Russia’s absence from the fund will facilitate its operations by not having to wait for “decisions from Moscow” every time that any policy decision has to be made. But all believe Russia’s action is a serious blow to the promotion of international understanding.
