Mr and Mrs A. S. Fong will arrive from Wellington by to-day’s express.

A* New York cable records the death at San Antonio, Texas, from pneumonia, of General Patch, who commanded the U.S.A. Army in the south of France and later on the Western Front.

Mr. Harlow Gage, Assistant General Manager, General Motors (N.Z.), recently arrived from New York, and Mr. Ray Wright, Sales Manager, General Motors (N.Z.,), are visiting the West Coast and will leave today for the glaciers in company of Mr. A. F. Read, Managing Director of Schaeff’s Ltd.

A London cable stated: Princess Margaret underwent an operation for appendicitis. The operation was successful and the doctors say her condition is satisfactory. The King, the Queen and Queen Mary earlier called on the Princess. The operation was performed in Princess Margaret’s own room in Buckingham Palace between nine and ten a.m. on Thursday after it was decided late the previous night to operate.

Mr. G. R. Ritchie, of Dunedin, who has been a member of the Board for 35 years, has been elected' chairman of the Union s.s. Company Directorate in succession to the late Mr. N. S. Falla, who was and Managing Director. Mr. J. N.-Green-land, general manager, has been elected managing director and deputy chairman. Mr. M. B. . Miller, assistant general manager is now general manager and a member ot the board of directors. Mr.. H. _H. Dobie and Mr. A. N. Leslie, jomt assistant managers at head office have become assistant general managers. Mr. Greenland was born at Westport and joined the company as a junior in the Westport office in 1902. Mr. Miller entered the company’s employ at Dunedin in 1908.

.Many friends will regret to. learn of the sudden death late last night of Mrs Kate Knapp, wife of Mr George Knapp, of Threadneedle Street. She had been in indifferent health only for a few days, and as she yesterday had been up and about, her death came to her relatives as a great shock. A native of Greymouth, and a member of the well-known Fraser family, she was 56 years of age, and had resided here all her life. Besides her husband she leaves. '-a."-family of nine, the six sons being Simeon, John, Arthur and Clifford (Greymouth), Edmund (Wellington) and George (overseas with the Forces); and the daughters are Misses Moria and Teresa (Nelson), and Patricia (Greymouth). She is also survived by five brothers, Rev. Brother Gonzales (Kilmore College, Melbourne), John (Sydney), Edward (Duned’n), Courtney (Reefton), and Vincent (Wairoa). The relatives will have the sincere sympathy of many friends in their sudden bereavement.
