The Engineer Mr. A. J. Fairmaid, in his report this month to the Borough Council states:— The bus passenger shelter has been completed. Using concrete posts the'fence on the Chesterfield frontage of the cemetery is being renewed. The scales previouslv in use at the abattoir have been renewed, and the abattoir floor undei the beef rails has been repaired. In May it was reported that the outfall of the Abattoir drain had had to be extended for 24 feet on account of accretion to the sea beach. On account of subsequent erosion 16 feet of pipes (two pipes) were dislodged from the end and were deposited on top of the beach by heavy seas Ten permits for work valued at £5,100 were issued in August. The reservoir has been kept full by an average dailv pump run of 17.44 hours. A start had been made on the reformation of Marsden Road, the section between Shakespeare and Palmerston Streets receiving first attention. The work will be continued to Ida Street, thence along Ida and Marlborough Streets to Joyce Crescent. The slip on Easson’s Hill, Alexander Street, is moving at a greater rate than has been the case for some time, doubtless on account of the inclement weather, and has had to receive attention. To obviate scour the water tables in Convent Lane have been concreted down to the lower sumps and the Lane now approaches readiness for tar sealing. By arrangement with the owner the fence at tiie ’north eastern corner of the intersection of Puketahi and Tainm Streets has been set back on an IS feet radius. At the Alexander Terrace end of the overbridge across the Railway Station yards a rail has been erected to prevent direct linear" access. In McGinlev Park a fence is in course of erection to restrict the area available to carriers and others handling goods from the _ adjacent warehouse. Necessary repairs are being effected to Cobden Bridge. Footpaths are being formed on the Hall, Fox and Clifford Street frontages of the block bounded bv Bright Streets and those streets. The .steam roller required considerable repair after lying idlb throughout the war years. It has recently been used on Marsden Road. Sewerage work in Sturge Street is completed to beyond Ashmore Avenue roadway, 2,084 feet from the point of commencement. A further 90 feet of work is required to complete the job but the going is the most difficult vet encountered, the bottom being m fine water-bearing sand. The sewage pumping station in Preston Road is completed to floor level. Concurrently with this job, as tidal conditions permit, the outlet to Johnston Street sewer is being shifted 60 feet down stream to take it clear of the shipping berths. A storm water sump has been constructed in Marsden Road as part of the improvement work in hand there. Two others have been made in connection with the improvement of Convent Lane and its intersection with Tainui Street. The. Council approved the following recommendations of the Works Committee:—That street lighting in Hoty land Settlement be improved by the installation of additional 8-100 C.P. street lamps and that a plan submitted by the Housing Department for the subdivision of the land fronting Fitzgerald and Ward Streets, Holland Settlement, be approved; that street lighting in Mawhera Quay be improved bv increasing the power of that at Cobden bridge intersection to 250 C.P., there already being two of that power and one of 100 C.F. from this light to the one on the western end of the Riverside station, also that additional light be provided by the erection of a 250 C.P. lamp at the corner of the Railway Building opposite Greymouth station; that a concrete kerb and channel be constructed on the southern side of Wilson Lane along the building line, as a preliminary to tar-sealing; and that the engineer report on clearing of storm water in the block bounded by Marsden Road, Palmerston, Marlborough and Shakespeare Streets; that water, gas and sewer connections be laid for a motor camp at Victoria Park; that Pitt. Street be formed in readiness for letting sections of the Municipal Reserve, on the western side; that steps be taken to deal With the causes of excessive storm water flow on Joyce Crescent and across 'the intersection of that street with Milton Road; that the Westland Auction Co. Ltd., be required to have an addition erected by them on their premises in Mackay Street to comply with the Borough by-laws, and Mr. D. Hardie to take similar action, and that in the case of every permit granted the assistant engineer, Mr. Hall, inspect the work and report if he thinks they are not being done satisfactorilj'.
