ELECTRICITY CHARGES

REDUCTIONS ANNOUNCED. A detailed report, recommending reductions in charges, was presented by the Tariff and harges Committee to a meeting of the Grey Electric Power Board last evening. The charges recommended, with the existing charges in parenthesis, were as follows:— House wiring: Cost of materials, plus 25 per cent. (33 1-3 per cent), cost of wages plus 33 1-3 per cent. (50 per cent), transport at 9d a mile (9d). Repairs to appliances: Cost of materials plus 25 per cent. (33 1-3 per cent, cost of wages plus 33 1-3 per cent. (50 per cent.), transport at 9d a mile (9d). Repairs to wiring installations: Cost of materials ulus 25 per cent. (40 per cent.), cost of wages plus 15 ner cent. (15 per cent), transport at 9d a mile (9d). The chairman (Mr P. Blanchfield) ■said that the secretary had gone to a lot of pains to get comparative figures from every other Power Board in New Zealand. He believed that in the future it should be possible to make reductions in other lines as well.

Mr J. Mulcare said that he thought the 9d a mile transport charge was pretty high for country dwellers. It was pointed out that this was' pretty well the average charge throughout New Zealand. Although this charge might be heavier on country dwellers than on town people, the country people had the better of the deal when ranges were installed On the motion of Mr Mulcare. it was decided that the report, be adopted and that the recommendations come into force on October 1.
