RADIO FUSE BOMB

U.S.'Navy Weapon SECOND ONLY TO ATOMIC • BOMB (Rec. 9.30) WASHINGTON, Sept. 21 The Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Navy. Mr. Ansell, told’ interviewers: “The -radio proximity fuse is second only to the atomic bomb among the war’s greatest scientific developments. This fuse explodes a projectile as soon as it comes sufficiently close to its target to inflict damage. It is an extremely rugged five-valve radio sending and receiving station, and is fitted into the nose of the projectile. This radio then sends out electro magnetic waves at the speed of light. These waves are reflected by any target which gives a radio l reflection, such as metal objects, water, and earth. The American Navy has spent eight hundred milion dollars in developing and producing this fuse. If this fuse-equipped projectile passes within seventv feet of an aeroplane, reflected impulses act on the fuse circuit, setting off the main explosive charge. The British used it with striking effect against buzz-bombs in the summer of 1944.
