Smokers may continue to experience scarcity in supplies. Yesterday in Parliament Hon. D. G. Sullivan, answering a question by. Mr T. L. Macdonald (Nat., Mataura), said that the latest report from the F'actory Controller said that it would be difficult, even to maintain the recently slightly increased allocations of tobacco and cigarettes, but every effort to obtain workers and to increase the production was being maintained. Mr Sullivan said that the prospective manpower situation was such that the immediate future held out little hope of higher allocations. —P.A.

In little more than a week the H. McGlashan Memorial Bridge, which is being constructed in the Children’s Park, Greymouth, across Sawyer’s Creek, should be completed. One approach has been completed, and work will proceed shortly on the Tainui Street approach. This work and the removal of the. stringers and other framework will complete the job, and it is probable that the bridge will be officially opened shortly after.

The Greymouth tobacco shortage, which lasted two weeks, was relieved by the arrival yesterday of the district quota of tobacco and cigarettes for a four-week period. The last large consignment arrived early in August.
