WESTPORT NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent) WESTPORT, Sept. 18 The Kaitoa sailed last night for Motueka. The Rata commenced loading this morning for New Plymouth and sailed to-night. The Kakapo completed loading and sailed to-night for Wellington. The Kartigi is expected to complete loading and sail for. Auckland to-morrow morning. The Karepo, loading for Auckland, is not expected to complete before Thursday because of the class of coal required not being available.

Mr. C. H. Bryden, of Christchurch, is visiting her mother, Mrs. E. Kearns, Fonblanque Street. Mrs. J. H. McDonald, of Greymouth, is visiting Miss G. Douglas, Peel Street.

Mr. C. Hunt has arrived from the North Island.

Sir Harry Batterbee and Lady Batterbee visited Westport, en route to the Westland glaciers. During August, 1945, coal railed to the East Coast from Buller district mines, including those in the Charleston area totalled 11493 tons. For the corresponding period in 1944 excluding Charleston coal, <6,706 tons were railed.

The Westport branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, at its recent meeting, favoured being incorporated with the Farmers’ Federation. Mr. PI. V. Palmer was appointed chairman and Mr. M. Durkin vice-chair-man; and Mr.' H. Bennett, secretary. A motion of appreciation of Mr. J. Radford’s services as secretary for so many years was recorded and it was decided to hold meetings at Waimangaroa, Sergeant’s Hill, and Carter’s Junction, as well as at’ Westport, the next meeting to b e held at Waimangaroa. The first shoot of the sixth competition was fired by members of the Westport Miniature Rifle club on Saturday evening. J. R. Keoghan and L. Hutchison scoring 69 off the rifle tied fir the senior Hotty Button, while Peter Playsted with 68, won the junior and Mrs. K Smith with 62, won. the ladies’ section. With five competitions completed, the following is life position of club aggregates: Chip ciham,piionship: J Fa 'Keoghan 682 ex 700,. L. Hutchison 679. Handicap aggregate: Cadet R.
