STOCKTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent) Miss Stocker' of Wellington was a visitor last week, endeavouring to interest the ladies of the township in forming a dramatic circle. Miss Helen Steele has left Stockton and is now teaching at the Riwaka School. Mr. C. Hunter Inspector of Mmes, was a visitor last week.

Mrs. J. Whisker has been spending a short holiday in Westport. Mesdames Gilbert and. Currie recently returned after visiting Wellington to meet their nephew, Private P. McMillan who had been a war prisoner for several years. Pilot A. Swainson of the R.N.Z.A.F. who has been visiting his parents at Darlington, left last week. Mr. D. Hill of Westport was a visitor on Thursday last. Mr. A. Harris has . resumed worx after being on the injured list for a short period. Mr K. Rees resumed work last week’ after being off with an injured ankle. ~ . , Mr. M. Dague has been on the sick list for a few weeks. Mr. and Mrs. A. Swainson have left on a visit to the North Island. Miss A. Stewart has returned to Nelson after spending a holiday with her parents Mr. and Mrs. G. Stewart. The mine was idle on two davs recently owing to the death of Mr. F. Gear, aged 19, son of Mr. H. Gear, oi Hector. He sustained an injury, and was a patient in hospital for some little time, his death occurring in Christchurch. The funeral took place on Monday of last week. A public meeting last week discussed plans to put'the football field in playable order. It was decided to form a working bee and to approach the Mines Department for assistance, also to apply for a double unit Army hut to be used for sports purposes. A further meeting will be held when replies are to hand from the Mines Department and the Buller County Council. A lot of work has been done to the ground in the past, but something more than the pick and shovel is needed to deal with the project. Mechanical appliances will bo necessary to expedite the work.
