SURPLUS BEEF

DENMARK WITHOUT SHIPS

LONDON, Sept. 16. While the rest of Europe starves, Denmark has 3000 to 4000. tons of surnlus beef weekly, which is not exportable because shipping space is lacking, says the Associated Press correspondent at Copenhagen. Denmark since the liberation has exported 31.000 tons of butter, 16,000 eggs, and 4000 tons of bacon, half of which went to the American Army and half to the British Food Ministry. AUCKLAND, Sept. 17.

“Before Japan was defeated it was considered control of British shipping by the Ministry of War Transport would last another two years,” said Mr E. V. Bevan, New Zealand manager of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, who has returned by the Akaroa from a business trip to England. “That forecast is probably still correct. There are so many troops and so much war material to be shifted and things to be done in cleaning up the war that the lifting of control and the re-establishment of regular passenger services should take about two years.” Mr Bevan said his company is building two new cargo ships similar to'the Waiwera for New Zealand, and both are turbine-driven. They are due for delivery towards the end o r i next year. ’ Mr Bevan said that while the companies were only too anxious to resume normal trade and re-establish pleasure voyages they had to transport thousands of tons of food and closing to Europe for U.N.R.R.A. Asked whether there was any fear of nationalisation of ‘British shipping. Mr Bevan said the new Government bad enough on its hands already. The Government at present had full control of shipping.
