OVERSEA SHIPS FOR SMALLER PORTS. LICENSING OF BOOKMAKERS. PA WELLINGTON, July 19. In the House this afernoon, Mr. J. B F Cotterill (Govt., Wanganui), gave notice to ask the Prime Minister- Whether, in view of the improved position of shipping, representations would be made to the British Ministry of Shipping to have the overseas vessels calling at New Zealand ports revert to the former practice of loading at smaller ports? Mr. Cotterill said: “The smaller Harbour Boards have been prepared to make sacrifices in the war effort. They now consider that the time nas come when there should be a reversion to the pre-war practice Mr. R. McKeen (Govt., Wellington South), gave notice to ask the Munster of Internal Affairs: Whether his attention has been drawn to the result of questionnaires issued to residents by local organisations in nawera, Wanganui and Wellington, to ascertain their opinions on the licensing of bookmakers ? Mr. McKeen quoted figures showing that the replies were overwhelmingly in favour of the licensing of bookmakers. He said that these figures gave a clear indication of tne opinion of an important cross-section of communities. Would the Minister take immediate steps to facilitate the licensing of bookmakers ?
