BOXING PARS

(By “Left Hook”) The bout between Norman Ross and Jack McCann, which was to have taken place at Dunedin to-night, has been cancelled owing to McCann having accepted a bout 1 with,’ R. Stevens, at Auckland on Monday next, 21st inst. McCann did not let the Otago Boxing Association know that h P had signed up to meet Stevens when he accepted the bout with Ross. The local lad was trained to the minute, and felt confident he would keep McCann busy. It was a big disappointment tn him and to Frank Bell, but it would seem there is nothing they can do about it. The rules protect Boxing Associations, but the boxer has to grin and bear it when things go wrong. The rules are not framed to protect him from financial loss when a situation arises as stated above. Ross will meet Stevens at Dunedin on June-4, and it is anticipated that four amateurs will accompany him. They will possibly be: J. Boddy, W. Hamilton, J‘. Porter and G. Bowman. The final selection has not been made as yet, because forthcoming tournaments may produce boys of better calibre. The tournament to be held at Hokitika to-morrow evening should be a great success judging by the nominations received. An extra attraction will be a special exhibition by George Muir and Norman Ross. Southerners will have the opportunity of seeing these capable performers turn on a good exhibition. It is pleasing/ to see the name of A. Cowan among the Hokitika nominations. This boy put up a good showing last year when he defeated E. Ahearn of Wellington. He is, however, up against a tough proposition in K. Martini, of Runanga. The latter is a solid lad, and packs a hard punch in either hand. He has improved very much lately, and this bout should be the highlight of the evening. Hokitika fans will see a good pair of boys in action when Jackie Porter and B. Eder face each other. They should turn on a battle royal.
