FIRE IN METHODIST CHURCH. P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, May 13. Damage amounting to several thousands of pounds was caused when a fire broke out in Durham Street Methodist Church early this, morning. The organ, one of the best in Christchurch, was a total loss. Shortly before the engines from the Central Fire Brigade arrived, the Minister, Rev. Raymond Dudley, was awakened by a taxi driver, who noticed smoke issuing from the church. Mr. Dudley opened the church, and it was then seen that the organ was ablaze. The balustrade and pulpit had caught alight, and part of the ceiling was damaged. Boys of the Bible Class and male members of the church assembled at 4 a.m., and worked for about five hours, removing- debris and cleaning the church. Two special victory thanksgiving services, arranged for to-day, were held with a piano instead of organ music. “I FEEL LUCKY” ART UNION P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, May 12 Charges of desertion against Privates Albert William Moir, John Crosbie Boniface, and John Leonard Hall were heard b” a court! martial at Burnham yesterday. It was alleged that the men, having been warned for active service, were absent without leave on the day the last reinforcement left camp. All pleaded not guilty and the decision of the Court will be promulgated later. Major R. FI. Hill presided, and other members of the Court were Captains G. F. McEvedy, M.C., and R. J. Davis. The prosecutor was Lieut. L. E. Vernazoni, D.C.M., and the defending officer, Lieutenant G. G. C. Reid. Major J. D. Hutchison was judge-ad-vocate. ESCAPEES RECAPTURED P.A. DUNEDIN, May 12 The last of the three prisoners who escaped from th e Dunedin Police Station on Wednesday was captured about 10.15 p.m. yesterday. He was Dennis Murphy. The country round Waitati, where the fugitive was run to earth, is thick manuka scrub, which made the search difficult. .> The second escapee, David Warren Hodgkinson, was also found near Waitati on Thursday night.
