MEN’S CLOTHES

End of N.Z. Restrictions REMOVAL OF CONTROLS ON ZINC AND ABRASIVES P.A. WELLINGTON, May 13 All controls under his administration had been carefully considered with a view to relaxation, and he expected to receive early reports from several controllers indicating the proposed revocation of restrictions, said the Minister of Supply (the Hon D. G. Sullivan) on Saturday. He was able to announce the impending revocation of the austerity restrictions on men’s outer wear, namely suits and overcoats, but owing to textile shortages and the labour scarcity it would be necessary to continue the restrictions on women’s and girls’ underwear and outer clothing. Regarding abrasives, distributors would exercise unofficial control to prevent wasteful use, while in connection with zinc, this control was being entirely lifted. ' The Minister said: “Two other controls, not so well known to the general public, which have been important ones in manufacturing, relate to the control over abrasives, which has operated since 1943, and the control of zinc, which was imposed two years earlier. In the first case, the supply of abrasives has improved considerably, and sponsorship is no longer necessary to secure releases from the supplying countries. The Factory Controller has arranged for the distributors of abrasives to exercise an unofficial control for a period, to ensure that there is no wasteful use of these materials. Regarding zinc, which was one of the first materials to become critical in supply, the position eased somewhat a short time ago, and relaxation of control was effected but here again it has become possible to lift entirely the control in line with similar action abroad.”

Concluding the Minister indicated that all of the controls under his administration have already been very carefully considered with a view to relaxing them, and he anticipated receiving reports from several controllers indicating the proposed revocation of other present restrictions. He felt that it was important, however, to stress that many controls would have to continue for a considerable period yet.
