KUMARA NOTES

General regret was felt here on , Thursday morning when it became ! known that Mrs. Lorna Hyndman, wife of Mr. John Hyndman had passed away at the Westland Hospital, after a brief illness. She was a popular figure and was associated with most of the town’s activities, being a keen and active member of the Mothers’ Union and Women’s Institute. Besides her husband she leaves one young son Reginald; her parents Mr. and Mrs. H. McNabb; two sisters, Mrs. Kirby (Hari Hari), and Miss Nola McNabb (Kumara); and three brothers, Messrs W. H. McNabb (Hari Hari), W. J. McNabb and Master Allen McNa.bb (Kumara). The deepest sympathy of the community will be extended to the family in their bereavement. Driver W. A. McGrath and Driver F. J. Rochford, both of Dillmanstown, returned on Thursday evening with the latest draft from the Middle East. Miss Edna Moss of Christchurch is visiting Mr. and Mrs. W. J. McNabb. Mrs. J Reedy presided over a good attendance of the Women’s Institute on Wednesday evening. Three new members were welcomed. Mrs. A. Birss commenced the ' "Golden Thread” talk for the year on "Modern Affairs.” Mrs. Ollerenshaw gave an account of the recent Council meeting at Ross. A demonstration on making felt posies was given by Miss Shirley Gibson. A competition for the best baby’s feeder resulted: Mrs. Evenden 1, (Mrs. Stratford 2, Mrs. Becker 3. Twenty-two feeders were entered, and these will be donated to the children’s- ward at the Westland Hospital. Best bloom: Mrs. Lawson 1, Miss Hamer 2, Miss A. Caithness 3. Social half hour competitions were won by Mrs. M. K. Fahey (2) and Mrs. Strati ord. 'lhe President expressed regret at the impending departure of Mrs. Becxer who had always displayed a keen interest in the Institute, and presented her with a small gift from the members. Mrs. Becker suitably replied. Hostesses for the evening were Mesdames Becker and Birss. At the annual meeting of tne RS A. the following officers wer e elected: President, Mr. Jas Brown: vice-presidents, Messrs H. O. Jefcoate, and W. H. Neame; secretary, Mr. H. Hamer; auditor, Mr. A. Birss, committee, Messrs A. Birss, W J. Benyou R. Cunningham, Geo. Hunt, W. Hay’bittle, H Hayes. C. Johnsen J r Lalor, H. Neame, E. Rose, and Len Williams. Mr. R. Thomas was appointed delegate to the Hokitika committee, and Mr. Jefcoate to a meeting at Greymouth to-day to frame remits. Mr. R. Heslop was delegated to represent the branch at Greymouth, he stating that he preferred to remain in the Kumara branch. Mr Hamer, the secretary, read the balance sheet which showed a sound credit an increase of £lB on the ptevious year’s balance. Arrangements were made for Anzac Day parade and the sale of poppies. A hearty vote ot {hanks was accorded to the Preside.u and Secretary on the motion of Mi. Jefcoate, endorsed by Messrs R. Hes lop and W. H. Neame. An hours “smoko” was then enjoyed.
