KUMARA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] Mr. John Thomson, of Christchurch a former well known resident is visiting friends here. Messrs W. Nolan and D. Hanna have returned from Christchurch. Miss Shirley Gibson is an inmate of the Greymouth, hospital. Mrs. R. Cross, of Christchurch, who has been visiting Mr. and Mrs. J. Gibson, has returned to Christchurch. Sergeant Eileen Hill. V.A.D. who has recently returned from the Middle East is spending a few days in Kumara and is the guest of Mrs. Wise. On Friday afternoon the ladies of the Women’s Institute met at the residence of Airs. D. Caithness to welcome Miss Eileen Hill back from service in the Middle East. Messrs David Lawrence, Pat Kirwan and W. Benyon left recently for a military camp. Major Skinner passed through Kumara on Friday afternoon en route for Hokitika. Air. T. E. Y. S’eddon was a visitor to Kumara on Friday:. Mr. W. Stewart (President) occupied the chair at a meeting of stewards of the Racing Club. The secretarj' Mr. J. F. Gilbert presented a' statement of accounts for the race meeting of Feburary 10, which showed a satisfactory credit balance. Mr. J. A. Mclnroe tendered his resignation as a steward. Members spoke eulogistically of Mr. Mclnroe’s services and and hoped that would t’econsider his resignation before the anhual meeting came round. The President said the ladies of the local Red Cross had capably handled the refreshment and afternoon tea and it was pleasing to report that a splendid addition to the Red Cross funds had resulted from their efforts. Air. John Gilbert said that certain culverts which might last onl.v, a few years could now be renewed and suggested they be in concrete.
