HOKITIKA NOTES
[Our Own Correspondent]. HOKITIKA, February 16. With a bull-dozer and a party of workmen, the Public Works Department this morning proceeded with the job of protecting the wharf from erosion by the river. The local bodies involved, the Harbour Board and the Borough Council, have been asked by Cabinet to contribute a proportion of the cost of the undertaking. At high tide, to-day, a part of the debris in the river became disentangled from the remainder lying in I4«e river, and was washed to sea. Before the depositing of stone at the scene of the breach is begun, electric lines nearby, and a boiler and other remaining plant of the box factory will be removed, while the railway line will be repaired so as to carry a crane. The Racing Club has accepted the tender of Mr G. Elley for publican’s booths, and Mr S. Stephens for the ice-cream booth, at its meeting here to-morrow week.
The death occurred at her home, Kanieri Road, on Thursday, of Mrs Taylor, wife of Mr Joseph C. Taylor. The late Mrs Taylor was a native of Maryport, Cumberland, England, and was 66 years of age. One brother, Mr Lowther Scott, resides in Wellington. She had resided in Hokitika’ for the past 21 years, and had suffered an illness for a considerable period.
