HARBOUR BOARD WORKERS INDUSTRY DECLARED ESSENTIAL WELLINGTON, Feb. 15. , A' notice appearing in to-night’s Gazette declares the operations of all Harbour Boards in respect of permanent and weekly employees, and employees coming within the scope of northern Wellington and Otago and Southland Industrial Districts’ Boatbuilders’ and Shipwrights’ Award to be essential industry for the purpose of the Industrial Manpower Emergency;/ Regulations, 1944. The existing declaration, which covers only some Harbour Boards, is revoked. The Minister of Industrial Manpower, Mr McLagan, states the purpose of this new blanket declaration is to extend the cover of essentiality to the many smaller ports in the Dominion employing weekly workers not covered under the existing declaration. Mr McLagan said the smaller Harbour Boards were important units in the internal and external transport of the Dominion, as well as being responsible for aids to navigation within their areas, and it was felt that, under present circumstances, they should be declared essential.
