The death occurred at Christchurch last evening of Mrs Annie Costello, widow of Mr William Costello, at the age of 68 years. She was born at Greymouth, where she had lived up till the time of her death, being a well-known and highly-respected resident. She is survived by: three sons, Frank and James (Greymouth), and Allan, and six daughters, Mesdames Walshe (Westport), D. Quinlan (Stillwater), L. Brown (Wellington), E. Collie, Misses Mona and Dorothy (Greymouth). The death - of Mr. James Fitzgerald took place suddenly at Waiuta on Saturday morning. A single man, he was born at Ikamatua and had been a carpenter at the Blackwater Mines for many y e ars. In his younger days he was well known as a cricketer, having represented the province. He was a member of the Ist N.Z.E.F. He is survived by two brothers, Michael (South Westland)' and Patrick (Ikamatua) and one sister, Mrs. E. Grogan (Greymouth).

• The death took place yesterday oi Mrs. Margaret. Kidd, wife of Mr. James Kidd, of 166 Bright St. Cobden. Born at Greymouth, the late Mrs. Kidd was a daughter of Mrs. and and the late Mr. Silas Martin, ot Cobden, and was forty years of age. She had spent most of her life at Cobden, though she was for four years a resident of Blackball. She leaves besides her husband a family of two daughters, Misses Beverly and Jill Kidd. She is also survived by her mother, Mrs. Martin (Cobden), and one sister, Mrs. Parkyn (Thames). The funeral will take place to-mor-row. -

Mr. Lancelot William McCaskill of Christchurch, recently, appointed lec.furor in rural education at Canterbury Agricultural College, has been awarded the [Bledisloe Medal, presented annually to the former student of Lincoln College doing most, in the opinion of the governors, materially to assist farmers in New Zealand. or to advance the country’s interests, Mr. McCaskill has for more than twenty years been associated with the -rural life of the Dominion, having taught agriculture and allied subjects at schools m Auckland Taranaki, Wanganui, Wesltland. Canterbury and Southland.

Mr T. Bannehr, a veteran journalist and former editor of the Nelson' “Colonist,” celebrated his 9oth. birthday at Geraldine on Thursday. Congratulations came by telegram from the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser) and Mrs. Fraser, the Mayor and Councillors of the Geraldine Borough and members of the Geraldine Toe 11. as well as from members of his family and from numerous friends m New Zealand and as far afield as Sydney and Melbourne. Mr. Bannehr is remarkably clear in all his faculties and still takes an active interest in current events. A Justice of the Peace for more than fifty-five years he is one of the oldest men holding this office in New Zealand.

The death took place on Saturday at Lewisham Hospital, Christchuich, of Miss Mary Ellen Sullivan, ot Cowper Street, removing a most esteemed resident, of Greymouth. A native of Stafford, and the youngest daughter of the late Mr. and Mi°Wm. Sullivan, she came with her family to Greymouth, where she had since resided. Her kindly and genial nature won the late Miss Sullivan <*i host of friends, who will sincerely regret to learn of her death Bor many years she was the leading spirit in the Altar Society of St. Patrick’s Church, and as a worker loi the Church she leaves a vacancy that will not easily be filled. She is survived by two sister Mesdames J. Kennedy (Greymouth), and Rohlott (Christchurch) and by four brothers, William (Greymouth), John (Nelson), Richard (Kotuku), and' Dame (Blackwater). The relatives will have the sympathy of a wide circle of friends in their bereavement, Hie service, following Requiem Mass at St. Patrick’s Church, takes place this morsing at the Karoro Cemetery.

The death occurred suddenly last evening at the Westland Hospital of Mr. Charles William Stoop, a wellknown resident of Hokitika and for the last six years was overseer to tli. e Westland County Council. He was aged 54 years. Mr. Stoop entered the hospital only on Friday night. He was born at Woodstock and had lived on the West Coast all his. life. Before joining the staff of the County Council as foreman nine years ago, he was for a number ot years employed by the Rimu Gold Dredging Company and before that was mine manager for the Jerk sluicing claim at Rimu. He leaves his wife and six children, Mrs. B. Findlay (Greymouth), Mrs. W. Reynolds (Hokitika), Miss lAlma Stoop, W..A A.F. (Christchurch)? James (prisoner of war, Germany), Herbert

(Middle East Forces), and Errol (Hokitika), also four sisters, Mrs. G. Oates, senr., (Ruatapu) Mrs J. Young (Wanganui). Mrs. E. J. Wells (Woodstock), and Mrs.. D. Rae (Hokitika), and three brothers, John (Hokitika), Edward (Hokitika), and Fred (Hawera). The funeral will take place to-morrow afternon at the Hokitika Cemetery.

The death occurred on Saturday at the Reefton Hospital of Mis. Annabella Doig, of Totara Flat widow of Mr. Alexander Doig. She was aged 67 years.
