BLACKBALL NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent]. Mr. A. Oppenshaw, of Denniston, was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Cook over the week-end. Messrs C. Mountford, J. Walker J. Bateman and M. O’Flaherty attended the mining examination, held at Greymoueh during the week, _ eacn sittm cf for his underviewer’s ticket. Nurse N. Barron of the Grey Hospital staff is spending a holiday here as the guest or Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Cook. . , , Mr. J. Mountford met with a painful accident to his knee while working in the Blackball State mine. It wnl probaly incapacitate him for some time. Advice has been received from the secretary of the school committee that the Taylorville Silver Band ana Concert Parly have kindly agreea to put on a show in the Miners Hall, early next month, in. support of the school funds. The offer has been accepted by the committee.. H is to be hoped that this fine combination will meet with a crowded house. The date of their visit will be advertised shortly. Mr. McDonald of Denniston was the quest of MT. and Mrs. A. Knowles last week-end. Mr. Savage of Greymouth, was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Lyng last week-end. Pte. G. Dillon, who has returned from the Middle East and his wife ai’e visiting Pte. Dillon’s parents, Mr. and Nirs. Joe Dillon. Mr. R. Anderson, Denniston, was a visitor here last week-end being the guest of his brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. G. Anderson. Last Sunday afternoon saw the opening of the Blackball Mine Workers’ tennis court, winch has been refenced with high timber walls ana generally renovated. The timber was supplied by the Mines Department while the work was done by club members. The President Mr. Raymond Nuttall, expressed the thanks of members to the mine manager, Mr. L. C. Cook, and the Department for the practical interest they had shown in the club. He trusted they would enjoy a good season. Mr. n.. interesting games were then played. The bowling club opened their green last Sunday afternoon, ana there was a good turn out of members and visitors from as far away as Denniston. The President Mr. R. Mountford, senr., extended a warm welcome to the visitors ana expressed the hope, that the players wolld enjoy a good season. Mr. C. Strongman (Superintendent of the State Mined) spoke on behalf of the visitors and extended good wishes to the club. He introduced Mr. Congreve (President of the Greymouth Club) who extended the best wishes, Mr. Arnold upenshaw, mine manager Denniston on behalf of th e Denniston visitors congratulated the club on tneir splendid green and the interest local people were taking m the game. Tea was served by the ladies’ committee, who received a hearty vote of thanks. Ram spoilea the latter part of the afternoon, and play was abandoned. Quite a large company of members of the Denniston Masonic Lodge paid a visit to the Blackball Lodge last Saturday evening and spent the week-end here, returning by Monday evening’s railcar. A proposed visit -to the Ngahere Dredge had to ,be abandoned owing to the dredge ben « stopped for repairs. Opportunity was taken by the visitors to play a few games bn the bowling green.
