XMAS HOLIDAYS. THE COAL SHORTAGE (Rec. 7.20) CANBERRA, Nov. 23. The Australian coal miners will definitely receive their fourteen days’ Xmas holiday. This was announced to-day by the Minister for Labour, Hon. Mr Holloway. There remain twenty-one more working days until the Christmas break on the coalfields. Some observers fear that a shortage of coal stocks will force a teniporary closing of many industries over the Christmas period. The steel industry normally works at Christmas. it is not likely to be affected. To-day two thousand mine workers were on strike at six collieries. The loss was 6800 tons of coal. This follows the appeal by miners’ leaders to the men not to lose a Single day on issues outside of health and safety. Coal losses this week .amount to more than 34,000 tons. .T.. 1 - " ' ""
